'URBAN AGRARIANISM' - ARCDECK RADICAL DESIGN PROJECT 2020

I took part in ArcDeck’s annual Radical Design Project, tasked with a very open brief to simply express a design that goes beyond the limitations of current architectural and construction capabilities and guidelines.
My design aimed to tackle the farming and food supply crisis in Hong Kong, following some already emerging precedents of urban roof-top farming. The design is composed of a kit of parts with three key installations: The farm, The grocers and The kitchen garden. The architecture for these installations is prefabricated and hypothetically delivered on site by helicopter, built from lightweight timber elements. The rooftop farm utilises unused urban space which is a rarity in the high density skyline of Hong Kong. The produce is farmed by locals and residents and then lowered by crane to the street ‘Grocers’, the concept is that produce is supplied within locality zones; bought by and ran by locals, in complete contrast to the 80% imported produce from Mainland China that Hong Kong currently relies on. The kitchen garden is a parasitic, steel skeletal, glass ‘green-house’ that is suspended from the existing walls of Hong Kong’s tower-block residences. The kitchen garden intends to give the millions living in the city’s ‘concrete jungle’ access to their own green space and the ability to grow their own food and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
My submission was awarded as Part of the Top Ten entries and featured on their Website and social media as part of an Online Magazine.
